It’s time again for The Secret Recipe Club. This month my assignment was to visit the blog of Natural Noshings and find something to make. I was surprised and happy to get Nora’s blog. She was an orphan from last months blog hop, and I’m super happy to be the one to make sure it doesn’t happen again this month.
Nora is a self-described active, twenty-something “foodie” with a passion for nutrition and eating natural, real food — nothing too fussy, over-processed or complicated. Sounds good to me! I try to follow the same guidelines in my cooking, which isn’t easy when you have a family of junk food junkies. : )

What with trying to find healthier sweets for my family, and the 4th of July coming up, I found what I wanted to make right away when I came across Nora’s recipe for Red White and Blue Popsicles. These treats are as fun to look at, as they are to eat. The healthier aspect of it is what really won me over though. No need to feel guilty when someone grabs one of these treats out of the freezer on a hot Summer day.

Of course I cant ever leave things well enough alone, and I did tweak the recipe to suit my families taste. I blended the fruit instead of leaving it whole, so it would look more 4th of July colorful, as well as more like an actual popsicle you would get from the store. (My family can be so picky sometimes!) I also added some greek yogurt to them, one for the added punch of dairy and protein, and also for a more “white” look in the color mix.

These turned out pretty and delicious, and will become a regular treat item in our household this Summer.

Red White and Blue Fruit Popsicles

10 minutes

6 hours

Layer 1
strawberries or raspberries
splash of white grape juice or apple juice
Layer 2
greek yogurt (plain)
splash of milk
1 banana
2 Tablespoons honey
Layer 3
blueberries or blackberries
splash of white grape juice or apple juice
Popsicle mold

Blend the strawberries with the apple juice in a blender. (About 30 seconds, or until well blended) Fill the popsicle molds 1/3 of the way full with the strawberry mixture. Place into the freezer for two hours, or until frozen solid.

Blend together the yogurt, milk, honey and banana. Again, fill the molds 1/3 of the way up with the yogurt mixture and freeze two more hours.

Finally, blend the blueberries and apple juice together, and fill the molds the rest of the way up with the blueberry mixture. Add your popsicle sticks at this time, and freeze until solid, about two more hours.

To help release the pops from the molds, allow them to sit at room temprature for about five minutes, or run hot water over the mold for a few seconds.
