Fresh flour tortillas, there is no comparison between them and the store-bought variety. There are many recipes out there for these yummy treats, but they all are one and the same. Just flour, salt, baking powder and lard. (If you don’t have access to lard, you can use vegetable shortening instead.) That’s it! Easy huh? I used my new tortilla press my husband bought me a few days ago to make us some for supper last night, and the taste was unbelievable. Soft and so yummy, they quickly polished off two tacos a piece. The rest was flash frozen, and are in the freezer, ready for whenever someone wants one. (They make awesome breakfast burritos!) I cant wait to make myself some corn ones. If it’s in your budget, I definitely recommend getting a tortilla press, it makes the job unbelievably easy.

Flour Tortillas

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons lard (Lard is easy to make, check out my recipe HERE)
1 1/2 cups water

Whisk the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a mixing bowl. Mix in the lard with your fingers until the flour resembles cornmeal. Add the water and mix until the dough comes together well. Knead for a minute until it is smooth. (Use a dusting of flour if necessary) Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Cover the dough balls with a dish towel and let the dough rest for about 10 minutes.

Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Use a well-floured rolling-pin to roll a dough ball into a thin, round tortilla. Carefully place onto the hot skillet and cook until bubbly and golden, about 30-40 seconds. Flip the tortilla over and continue cooking until golden on the other side.

Place the cooked tortilla in a tortilla warmer, or keep covered with a dish towel. Continue rolling and cooking the remaining dough.

Or, if your lucky enough to have a tortilla press, your job becomes MUCH easier. Just place the ball of dough into the tortilla press, press the lid down firmly and voila, perfect round tortillas. Remove and continue with the rest of the instructions on cooking them.

Once cool, store them in a plastic baggie in the refrigerator, or flash freeze them, then store in a baggie in the freezer. To rewarm, wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave for 20-30 seconds or wrap in foil and warm in the oven.

    • I know exactly what you mean Susie. I ate many a Hispanic style meal with extended family members for 10 years, it was some of the best food I ever ate in my life.

  2. You're right. Homemade tortillas are the best! We've gotten into the habit of making corn tortillas and they are SO yummy. Now I'm getting hungry for some tacos or tostadas.. :)

    • Corn tortillas are my favorite too, but my husband likes the flour kind. I find the flour ones are easier to use when I'm making enchiladas as well.

  3. Tortillas are a staple at my house (and I'm NOT hispanic), I've always wanted to try making my own, but have been a little intimidated. I'm going to try this recipe. I'm also going to check into that tortilla press, looks amazing! If you were making corn tortillas would you just substitute the all purpose flour for masa harina?

    • Hi Chellie :) We're not Hispanic either, but we sure do love good Mexican food at my house. While corn tortillas are just as easy to make as flour tortillas, they are a little different as to the ingredient list, and method of preparing them. Here is the link to my corn tortilla recipe. http://angelfoodskitchen.wordpress.com/2010/04/13…
I hope you can get yourself a tortilla press. They are fairly inexpensive, and make the work of preparing tortillas a lot easier. Let me know how it goes for you.
