When I lived in Chicago, one of my favorite items on the neighborhood grill menu was the Gyros. This sandwich is originally made with lamb and is super tasty with the addition of Tzatziti, a cucumber sauce. Since I moved back to Southern Indiana in 1999, I haven’t had another one. What with lamb being so hard to find, and expensive if you did happen to find some in a specialty store, it was definitely out of the question for making my favorite sandwich. Until now. Even though this recipe is made with ground beef, it taste so much like a regular Gyros that it’s amazing.

Sauce
1 (8 ounce) container plain yogurt
1/3 cup chopped seeded cucumber
2 tablespoons finely chopped onions
1 garlic clove, minced
1 teaspoon sugar

Filling
1 lb lean ground beef
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
4 Pita Breads
3 cups shredded lettuce
large tomato, chopped
1 small onion, chopped

In a bowl, combine first 5 ingredients. (*Warning* Do not mix this sauce in a blender. It will turn into cucumber water, not sauce. Please don’t ask how I know this. *sigh*) Cover and refrigerate. In separate bowl, combine ground beef and seasonings. Mix well. Shape into 4 patties. Grill, covered, over medium to high heat for 10 to 12 minutes or until meat is no longer pink, turning once. Cut patties into thin slices. Stuff into pitas. Add lettuce, tomato, and onion. Serve with yogurt sauce.
