It’s time for Group B’s reveal in the Secret Recipe Club. While I normally post with Group D each month, I have the pleasure of joining in with Suzanne’s posse today. Suzanne is one of the wonderful hostesses that helps me work the magic of the SRC behind the scenes. If it wasn’t for her and the other 3 fantastic hostesses helping me, this club definitely wouldn’t be possible.
The blog I was assigned to is A Spoonful of Thyme. Kathy is the mastermind behind this blog, which is filled with delicious recipes. Some of the yummy options that caught my eye were Bacon and Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms, Chicken and Cheddar Stuffed Poblanos and German Chocolate Cupcakes. I finally settled on a Paula Deen recipe she had posted though. Praline French Toast.
I’m a huge fan of Paula’s so I was hooked as soon as I seen this casserole. And it didn’t disappoint. It turned out so sweet and yummy, with a wonderful crunch from the nuts and sugar on top. The only thing I did differently was make it a bit healthier by omitting the butter it called for. While there is certainly nothing wrong with butter, I use quite a bit of it in my cooking, I just thought it really wasn’t necessary. It turned out perfectly and will be a welcome addition to our menu from now on.
Ingredients
- 4 eggs
- 3/4 cup half and half
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 4 slices soft bread, 1 inch thick
- Topping
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
Directions
- Generously butter a 8 x 8 inch casserole dish.
- In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, half and half, maple syrup, and sugar.
- Place the bread slices in the prepared casserole dish and pour the egg mixture over the bread.
- Cover with plastic wrap and let soak overnight in the refrigerator. Or if time is short, allow to soak at least one hour before baking.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Remove the casserole from the refrigerator.
- Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with the sugar and pecans. Drizzle with syrup and return to oven.
- Bake for an additional 15 to 25 minutes until the casserole is golden brown.
- Remove from oven and allow to sit for 10 minutes before serving.

I love Paula Deen recipes, I am always drawn to them. I bake a ton with butter and am recently into looking for non butter options. This toast looks great and perfect for a sunday morning :)

I love that it's made as a casserole. It makes it easy to cook for the whole family instead of just cooking a few pieces at a time. Looks delicious!
