We all know how expensive it can be to feed our family healthy, real food, that they will actually like and eat in today’s market. It seems like food prices are getting higher every week. It can make a mom feel like giving up, and just buy whatever is cheapest, which usually means the least healthy. To the rescue, Your Grocery Budget Toolbox. This ebook, written by Anne, a fellow blogger over at Quick and Easy, Cheap and Healthy shows you how to feed your family wholesome food on a budget!
When Anne asked me to do a review of her book, I was intrigued by the name when I seen it. Visions of my husband’s toolboxes came to mind. All of those drawers, full of the tools that he needs to keep our home and vehicles running properly. Would this ebook be the same? Full of tips and ideas that would help keep me and my family healthy, and running at our best? I’m glad to say I wasn’t disappointed. I was really impressed with the amount of helpful information it contained.
Some of the highlights from the book:
- The Budget - How to make one, and a sample $250/month budget for a family of four. (2 adults, and 2 small children)
- The Price List - Easy, step-by-step instructions on how to make and maintain one.
- Once an Month Shopping - How it’s done, and how it can save you money.
- Do it Yourself Foods - A list of recipes for those processed foods, like pizza crust and yogurt, made healthier.
And so much more…
Included at the end of each chapter are challenges for you. They offer an easy and simple way for you to actually implement the information the chapter covers. What a neat concept. No matter how much information you may research and read on a subject, if you don’t use that information, what good has it done you?
I menu plan, so I was interested in seeing what the chapter that dealt with once a month shopping would be able to teach me. I shop once a week, but would love to be able to cut that down to just once a month. Buying perishables always prevented me from taking that step though. There’s no way buying a month’s worth of milk would be realistic for me. One of the challenges in that chapter asked the question, “Would the modified OAMS (with weekly “mini-trips”) work better for you”? My answer was a definite yes. I found out that I could still do a major once a month shopping trip, where I bought the majority of my food items, then could make several smaller trips through out the month, to buy perishable items when they ran out. I am now in the process of making a monthly shopping list, and will be attempting it next month.
Anne writes from years of experience, and has a wealth of information to share on real, healthy food that people can really afford. There are even ways to boost up your savings more by having your own garden, canning and other ways to stretch what you already have. One of the main themes that stood out for me in the book, was the concept that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing when it comes to eating healthier. That touched home with me, since I try my best to buy my family wholesome food that is good for them, but sometimes just cant afford the price of an organic chicken, over the stores package of chicken breast that are on sale. With all of the great information and tips in this book though, it will be a lot easier now!
Final Thoughts: This 150+ page ebook is jam-packed with all the tools you’ll need to eat healthy on a budget. I recommend this book to everyone who is looking for a way to save money, while taking the steps to eat healthier whole foods.
